The PAGG Stack

The PAGG Stack was created by Tim Ferris. Credit where credit's due. He calls it the Four Horsemen of Fat-loss. What Are the Elements of the PAGG stack? 1. P = Policosanol, 20-25 mg. Take it before bed at night. It can reduce your cholesterol levels (not necessarily something you need to do, based upon the latest research). It also has unproven fat loss potential.  2. A = Alpha Lipoic Acid, 100-300mg. Take with each meal (assuming you're eating every two hours).  ALA has an impressive impact on glucose uptake and reduced triglyceride production. It increases muscular absorption of the calories - the more calories absorbed into muscle means fewer calories deposited as fat and faster strength gains. ALA is...

Night Time Skincare Routine

It’s 6:30 pm, the kids are in the bath, tummies are filled and I’m ready to go to sleep with them in one hour! Somehow I have to juggle the steps between now and then and get myself taken care of (because I NEVER go to sleep without washing my face and brushing my teeth.) A few nights a week, I smear on the mask while the kids are in the bath, which gives me at least 10 mins to have it on, sucking out the dirt and grime of the day. But before that, I cleanse with jojoba oil. “With whaaaat?!” you may ask. I find that cleansing with an oil cleanser removes my eye makeup, dirt, makeup etc...

"A man walks down the streetHe says why am I soft in the middle nowWhy am I soft in the middleThe rest of my life is so hard?”   Or a woman, for that matter. That was Paul Simon's, "You Can Call Me Al."Here are a few facts for starters. 1. On pound of fat is about 4082 calories. Half an hour on the treadmill might burn 140 calories (about a Snickers bar).  Think you're going to make dietary changes and go running once a week and just eat less to lose 10 lbs? Good luck.  2. 10 lbs is roughly the weight of your head, or a clothing size. 3. A lot of people drink their calories, and some...

Brain Health and Cognition

There is much talk about epidemics, if you look beyond the rhetoric and twaddle in the mainstream media. There are epidemics of ADHD, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. There is one dual qualified neurologist AND nutritionist in the United States. His name is Dr. David Perlmutter and he has a very interesting opinion about why the epidemics exist.  More interestingly than that is that he has a solution to both retard and reverse the above mentioned conditions.  In a nutshell, grains have devolved into a different animal entirely than their prehistoric origins. Grains have become addictive, health-damaging and very difficult to avoid. The glycemic index is the scale between 1 and 100 upon which foodstuffs are evaluated in their ability...

Cleaning Out Your Food Closet

We find that it is always best not to have things in the house that may serve as a temptation when undergoing a nutritional regimen shift.  That’s easy enough, but how do we recognize exactly what is NOT good for us MSG. Monosodium glutamate has been described as an excitotoxin.  This flavor enhancer is linked to a host of health issues, including fibromyalgia (1), obesity (2), fatty liver (3), high insulin and blood sugar (3), high cholesterol (3), liver toxicity (3), metabolic syndrome (4), high blood pressure, disturbance to the gut-brain connection (5), neurological and brain damage (6). The danger lies in that MSG is almost impossible to avoid. MSG is also suggested to be responsible for allergies, asthma, stomach...
