Heavy Metal and its Consequences

Our modern world couldn’t survive without metal.  It forms the backbone of our buildings, our vehicles, our transportation and defense systems.  It even shows up in our teeth when we need dental work. But a certain type of metal is highly toxic to humans, and we need to do everything we can to minimize our exposure to it.  Heavy metals earned their name because of their high molecular weights, which makes them denser and heavier than other metals.  Examples of heavy metals are arsenic, chromium, cadmium, copper, lead and mercury. When ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin, these heavy metals can have serious health consequences.  Over time, they can cause diseases and cancers of the major organs, anemia, and brain...

Allergies in Children

Have you ever wondered why so many kids these days are allergic to peanuts? Where did this allergy come from all of a sudden? Before 1900, reactions to peanuts were unheard of. Today almost a 1.5 million children in this country are allergic to peanuts.  What happened? Why is everybody buying EpiPens now?  Looking at all the problems with vaccines during the past decade, [2] just a superficial awareness is enough to raise the suspicion that vaccines might have some role in the appearance of any novel allergy among children. Sun Protection Tips

As the sun shines stronger and the days are longer, our kiddos tend to spend more time outside. We don’t want to block them completely from the sun’s rays but we do want to protect them from getting burned. We spent the last 3 years in Costa rica, 8 degrees north of the equator. The risk of burning was high and we all have relatively fair skin. Here is a tip we have used for years. Before applying sunscreen, rub coconut oil all over...

Breast Feeding While Sick...

Kids are germ bags. We send them off to school with a hug and a kiss and they bring home all sorts of nasty stuff….thanks, right? Well, if you’re a nursing mom and you picked up say, influenza, strep throat, common cold or some hellish virus, you can be thankful for your loveable little germ bag.  Our daughter is 4 and goes to kindergarten and until recently, I hadn’t been sick like this in nearly 12 years. Even the febrile tropical viruses in Costa Rica got nothin’ on what I got here in the US, while nursing our 8 week old son. And you know what, I am so grateful! When we get sick, our bodies produce antibodies against whatever...
